Fake checks and overpayment scams
"I sent too much, just send back the difference."
A buyer, employer or "prize" company sends you a check for more than you're owed and asks you to send the extra back. The check looks real and your bank may make the money available quickly, but it can bounce days or weeks later, and you're responsible for the money.
Where it shows up
- Selling something online
- Mystery shopper and work-from-home "jobs"
- Sweepstakes and lottery "winnings"
- Rental deposits
The rule
Never send money back to someone who sent you a check or a payment. "Available funds" doesn't mean the check has cleared.
