Tech support scams and pop-up warnings
Real tech companies don't call you or lock your screen.
A loud pop-up says your computer is infected and gives a number to call. Or someone calls claiming to be from a well-known tech company. Either way, they want remote access to your computer and then your money.
Red flags
- A pop-up with a phone number and a warning not to turn off your computer
- An unexpected call about a virus or a "refund" for a service
- A request to install remote access software
- Being asked to log in to your bank "to receive a refund"
What to do
- Close the browser; if it won't close, restart the computer
- Never call a number in a pop-up
- Never let someone you don't know connect to your computer
- If you already let them in: disconnect from the internet, run your security software, change passwords from another device, and call your bank
