Your data was in a breach. Now what?

What to do depends on what was exposed.

4 min read

Breach notices are common. Most don't lead to fraud, but a few quick steps lower the risk, and they depend on what was exposed.

If it was

  • A password: change it, everywhere you used it, and turn on two-step login
  • A card number: ask the bank for a new card and watch statements
  • A bank account number: tell the bank and turn on alerts
  • Your Social Security number: freeze your credit and get an IRS Identity Protection PIN

Watch out for

Scammers send fake breach notices too. Use the company's official website rather than links in the notice.
